Access and Inclusion

The Shire of Peppermint Grove is committed to ensuring that services, events, information, buildings and facilities within its control are accessible for people of all abilities in the community. This includes meeting the specific requirements of people with disability, seniors, children, parents and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The Shire recognises that all residents and visitors contribute to the social, economic and cultural life of the community.

The seven DAIP outcome areas provide a framework for translating the principles and objectives of the Disability Services Act into tangible and achievable results:

Outcome 1 People with disability have the same opportunities as other people to access the services of, and any events organised by the Shire of Peppermint Grove.
Outcome 2 People with disability have the same opportunities as other people to access the Shire of Peppermint Grove buildings, facilities and infrastructure.
Outcome 3 People with disability receive information from the Shire of Peppermint Grove in a format that will enable them to access the information as readily as other people are able to access it.
Outcome 4 People with disability receive the same level and quality of service from the staff of the Shire of Peppermint Grove as other people receive from the staff of the Shire of Peppermint Grove.
Outcome 5 People with disability have the same opportunities as other people to make complaints to the Shire of Peppermint Grove.
Outcome 6 People with disability have the same opportunities as other people to participate in public consultation by the Shire of Peppermint Grove.
Outcome 7 People with disability have the same opportunities as other people to obtain and maintain employment with a public authority.

Disability Access in your Business

Businesses within the Shire of Peppermint Grove can do their bit to assist local people with disabilities and their families.

There are many ways that the business community can welcome people with disabilities both as employees and as customers.

Businesses have the potential to benefit substantially by improving customer service and considering the needs of all their consumers including people with disabilities in their business planning and development.

The Department of Communities (Office of Disability) is the State Government agency that funds and provides services to Western Australians with disabilities and their families and carers. The Office of Disability has been established by the Department of Communities to promote the rights and interests of people with disability and the broader disability sector.

The Office of Disability provides disability sector stewardship, advice on State and Commonwealth systems, and drives work and innovation to advance inclusion and participation of people with disability in Western Australia. The Commission’s website, Disability services (www.wa.gov.au) provides further information on access and inclusion initiatives and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
